About the event

This is YELLOWBELLY RECORDS: REFLECTIONS

This event is an absolute folk tour de force, as we retake The Birdcage for a night of music from four folk artists who are amongst Lincolnshire's best.

The headliner for this event is Les Brown. A Lincolnshire-based singer/songwriter, Les Brown has been writing and performing his own songs in folk clubs and at folk and blues festivals since the mid-eighties, and he has so far written and recorded eleven CD albums, as well as also having written, directed and produced a stage musical “Tommie's War” in 2004. Mainly accompanying himself on guitar, which he plays in a variety of open tunings, Les also plays bouzouki, ukulele, piano, concertina, harmonica and banjo, and at times sings unaccompanied.

You will be able to get your hands on copies of his fantastic latest release "Reflections" for £10 each, along with his other releases and a number of our other amazing releases to date!

Supporting Les for this event are three top tier folk artists:

Dogwood Union - a folk trio who specialise in playing folk, celtic, country music. Utilising guitar, fiddle, bouzouki, flute and whistle, as well as some beautiful two-part harmonies, Dogwood Union expertly take the sounds of great folk artists of old, and give them a 21st Century edge. Yellowbelly Records has recorded two albums with Dogwood Union to date, live album "For Folk's Sake: Dogwood Union" and studio album "Wilder Than Honey" - both of these are available from the Yellowbelly Records website.

Turning of the Tide - an Acoustic Roots Band from Sleaford, Turning of the Tide all started in 2008, by the humming of a tune from Mr Bacon; "...turning of the tide...". Suffice to say, they thought it was a great name for a band and so, in 2008, they stepped forth, and then forgot to go any further. But, finally, in 2013, they decided to give it another go. And here they are, regularly performing across Lincolnshire, in the likes of Grantham, Sleaford, Lincoln, Wainfleet, and Leadenham, to name a few. Yellowbelly Records has recorded one albums with Turning of the Tide to date, live album "For Folk's Sake: Turning of the Tide" - this is available from the Yellowbelly Records website.

Malt Whiskers - new to the Yellowbelly Records fold, Malt Whiskers are a folk quartet consisting of Robin 'Brad' Braddow, and his wife June, and husband and wife Ray and Pam Thompson. Tom Lane from BBC Radio Lincolnshire, 600 Whiskies Unplugged and Lincolnshire Day of Folk has written of them: “Whether performing solo or together, these musicians from the Newark area represent everything good about the grass roots of folk music. Highly talented, yet charming and modest, their singing and musicianship is of the highest calibre. You can’t say fairer than that.” Tina Shirt, organiser of Mansfield Folk Club has written of them: "This lively trio had us calling for more on their last visit. They just love to play and have a fabulously varied repertoire". A very welcome recent addition to the band is Brad’s wife, June, on guitar, bass guitar and vocals.

We are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming good friends Dogwood Union and Turning of the Tide back into the mix up for this one, and are equally thrilled to have our first with Malt Whiskers and, of course, the man of the hour for this event, Les Brown.

Nights of traditional and grass roots folk music at this calibre are rarer nowadays, so make sure you come on down to this event, because it will be absolutely sensational!

This event is also 100% free, and you will be able to pick up some cheeky Yellowbelly Records merch and releases, as well as nab a first release edition of "Reflections", the fantastic new release from Les Brown.

We look forward to seeing you there!
